Goodreads Summary: In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees . . . .
Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.
Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.
As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?
Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.
Why I liked it... Although the topic of angels is nothing new, I thought that the premise of people with angel blood (descendants) have a purpose to fulfill. I also liked that the author put the a quote from the bible:
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown. Genesis 6:1-4
I've always found this scripture interesting and if you do any research on it you will find TONS of different opinions. Some say proof that angels did, and may still, walk among us. Food for thought eh?
I liked the writing, the flow of the story and how there were mysterious elements through out the story that were not given away at ALL. What I mean is that as a reader, I knew there is way more to Clara's mom...you just totally get that feeling. In a lot of books, this "mysterious" element is exposed at the end for a climax/"wow" factor. The author doesn't give it all away at once which means we have stuff to look forward to in the next book!
Characters....Clara is a realistic and likable teen and she makes a few decisions in the book that a very real and fallible teen would probably make. She tries to be a good friend about as hard as she focus on her "purpose" it just seems that other things are always getting in the way!
Her younger brother Jeff and her mother, who I mentioned earlier and who I think has a much more complicated story than we know.
There is also Tucker and his twin sister Wendy. Of course Christian who Clara is having visions about and a new quirky friend Angela.
Oh and a creepy mysterious, scary guy who I think we will find out more about in upcoming books!
Final thoughts... I think this is a great addition to the paranormal romance set. The writing is strong and the story is interesting and flows nicely. Between the cover and the topic itself I'll have a whole herd of readers ready to check this one out!
