Wanna See Something REALLY Scary????

Monday October 25, 2010

Well it's Scholastic Book Fair time again! Sometimes I wonder WHY I do this to myself! Unlike elementary schools and maybe some lucky middle schools, I have no PTA or PTO to rely on for help....just me! Getting parent volunteers seems to be really difficult in middle school...I have my one or two regulars who I hate to burden all the time so mainly I just wing it :) By the time its over I realize it was actually pretty easy for all the benefits I actually receive (mainly those nifty Scholastic dollars which equals a lot of books we couldn't normally afford!)

The one thing that the book fair really affects is my ability to do any of my computer/cataloging time......here is the result of that

Scary, huh! The kids drool over these books because they can see them from the check-out counter. As a result there is whining all day long because "Its right there Mrs. Wishard why can't I check it out?!" I've always had a clerk in the library but that went the way of the Dodo two years ago because of budget cuts. Maybe someday they will reinstate the position which would be wonderful but until then...be afraid, be very afraid.....of my endless piles of unprocessed books :)

Nice haul! I usually use teacher workshop days to catch up an cataloging and processing because a lot of the sessions don't apply to me. We also have a book club in our middle school that helps staff the book fair. Contact me if you want to know how we do it without creating massive amounts of work for ourselves.

I hear you!!! I do have a full time aide, but we have a huge school and we run the bookfair during school hours. If I didn't have my aide I'd be at school until 8 pm at night just putting books away! Nonetheless process books. I feel your pain but I'm sure you're doing a great job nonetheless!

Hey - just wanted to comment too - I am the full time aide! I run the bookfair and yes - volunteers - what are they? It seems like a lot of work until it's over and you get to see the huge stack of Scholastic dollar paid for books on the shelf - that the students are drooling for! I say yah! to all of us who work so hard! Maybe we should have a contest to see who can get their stack cataloged first, but I don't see it in my super near future - I am hoping by the second week in November - wish me luck! Happy reading - have fun checking out all those great titles once their in the system!

Wow. Impressive stash of books but daunting to have to catalog the entire stack yourself.
