A serial killer on the loose. A girl with a morbid ability. And the boy who would never let anything happen to her.

Violet Ambrose can find the dead. Or at least, those who have been murdered. She can sense the echoes they leave behind... and the imprints they leave on their killers. As if that weren't enough to deal with during junior year, she also has a sudden, inexplicable, and consuming crush on her best friend since childhood, Jay Heaton.

Now a serial killer has begun terrorizing Violet's small town... and she realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.

Wow, this is one delicious read! I made the mistake of starting it at about 10pm and I uh, finally got to sleep at 2am....yep whoops, but I couldn't put it down!

Violet has had her "gift" for as long as she can remember. It started with animals she would find out in the woods....sometimes a weird taste, or sound or even something visual like a shimmer would lead to her to their little dead bodies. The same imprint or "echoes" on her cat would let her know who the killer was. This is how she found out that she could link killers and their prey by the matching echoes left behind.

When bodies start showing up and people start realizing a serial killer is on the loose, Violet is determined to stop him.

The nice thing about this story is that the author does a great job of giving Violet a pretty normal life despite her secret ability. This includes high school, boys, friends and all that goes along with being a teen. I like it because it balances the total super creepiness of the serial killer plot. The chapters that the killer narrates will have girls definitely looking over their shoulders!

The story of Violet and Jays friendship and the feelings that Violet discovers that she has for him is very sweet and will leave girls (old and young alike:) swooning. For all you guys out there, watch out! Jay is going to make you look bad and every girl who reads this book will be searching for their own Jay.

I loved this book and I can't wait until the next one...yes! The sequel is called Desires of the Dead and is expected to be released in 2011.

Without giving too much away there are no actual sex scenes but there are a few very steamy make-out passages....borderline shexy :) and a few mentions of alcohol plus the creepy serial killer makes this read best suited for 14 years old and up!
