Hearts at Stake (The Drake Chronicles #1)
by Alyxandra Harvey
Released December 22, 2009
Walker Books for Young Readers
On Solange’s sixteenth birthday, she is going to wake up dead. As if that’s not bad enough, she also has to outwit her seven overprotective older brothers, avoid the politics involved with being the only daughter born to an ancient vampire dynasty, and elude Kieran Black—agent of an anti-vampire league who is searching for his father’s killer and is intent on staking Solange and her entire family.
Luckily she has her own secret weapon—her human best friend Lucy—who is willing to defend Solange’s right to a normal life, whether she’s being smothered by her well-intentioned brothers or abducted by a power-hungry queen. Two unlikely alliances are formed in a race to save Solange’s eternal life—Lucy and Solange’s brother Nicholas, and Solange and Kieran Black—in a dual romance that is guaranteed to jump start any romance-lover’s heart.
With all the fancy, smancy covers out there these days sometimes people who know better (namely me) overlook books that don't meet some sort of bizarre standard we have for cover candy. Thank goodness books I'm sent review remind me to take a closer look! I picked up this book Sunday evening and didn't put it down until I finished it later that night!
The weird part is that (to clear any confusion because I was totally confused at first) the book was originally published or also published as "My Love Lies Bleeding" with this cover:
UPDATE: I'm such a dork...BookLuverCarol was kind enough to enlighten me that the other cover is the UK version... :o)
Chapters alternate between Solange and Lucy narrating each of their perspectives regarding Solanges unique situation. The girls have been friends forever starting with the friendship of their parents (with Lucy's parents having full knowledge of the Drakes heritage.)
There are a lot of different aspects to this book that I really like. Of course there is the romance with both girls falling for boys they never thought they would fall for but the story of Solanges would-be destiny and the path it takes her down is the heart of the story.
There are also some plot twists that will keep you guessing and at times it will be hard to tell exactly who is friend and who is foe.
If you are a fan or know a fan of paranormal romance/fantasy this book will be a hot ticket! A great story and fluid writing make for an easy read. According to the author's website, look for book 2 sometime in 2010!
Best suited for 7th grade and up
